BUILT BY SEGMENTUM · COWORK COST GUIDE
What Copilot Cowork costs an engineering firm
For a typical 28-person engineering consultancy - thirteen engineers, eight office staff, four client-facing, three directors - Copilot Cowork comes to roughly £4,610 a month all in: about £165 per person, the highest per-head figure of any sector we've costed. The reason is the work: engineers run heavy, multi-step tasks, and heavy tasks are what Cowork charges for.
What the everyday tasks cost
Tender or bid pack - 800-2,000 credits - £6.32 to £15.80 per run
Technical report write-up from notes and data - 400-1,200 credits - £3.16 to £9.48
Specification or standard summary - 400-800 credits - £3.16 to £6.32
Project minutes and actions - 100-300 credits - £0.79 to £2.37
An engineer producing two technical reports and sitting in weekly project meetings spends roughly £10 to £25 a month - against the write-up evenings the reports used to take.

Where the usage actually goes
Engineering consultancy produces documents at both ends of a project: the bid that wins it and the reports that deliver it. Both are heavy assembly work from material the firm holds - past projects, standards, site notes, data sheets - and both concentrate in the engineers themselves, which is why this sector's per-head cost tops the table. Fewer light users, more heavy ones.
The professional line matters here as much as in law or advice: Cowork drafts and summarises, but engineering judgement - the calculation, the design decision, the sign-off - is the engineer's, and in chartered work that's not a formality. A fluent AI draft of a technical conclusion nobody verified is a liability with good formatting. Draft with it; sign only what a person has checked.
The boundary: CAD, analysis and modelling tools sit outside Microsoft 365 entirely. Cowork lives in the words around the engineering - reports, specifications, correspondence, bids - which is a large slice of a consultancy's billable hours, but not the engineering itself.
Common questions
Can it do engineering calculations?
Treat anything numerical it produces as unverified. It drafts, summarises and assembles - calculations and design decisions belong in your engineering tools, checked by an engineer.
Why is engineering the most expensive sector per head?
The usage mix: engineers run mostly medium and heavy tasks. Same licence price as everyone else - more expensive habits.
Does it work with CAD or analysis software?
No. It works across Microsoft 365 - the documents, data sheets and correspondence around your technical tools, not the tools themselves.
Where does a consultancy see value first?
Bid packs and report write-ups. Both are assembly-heavy, deadline-driven, and built from material you already hold - the classic Cowork shape.
BEFORE YOU COMMIT
That's the cost. The harder question is whether it's the answer.
A new tool sitting on top of an estate that nobody fully understands usually adds cost, not clarity. So before you commit the budget, it's worth asking a simpler question: is Cowork actually your constraint, or is it something underneath it? We help established UK businesses get a clear view of what they're running - and whether the next bit of spend earns its place.
